Our milking parlor demonstration involves the dairy cows that are
entered as exhibits for the fair. A cow does not quit supplying milk just
because it is not home! The Westmoreland Fair uses this as an opportunity to teach the public about cows and milking. Stop by and bring the kids for an chance to learn something new.

Sheep to Shawl Demonstration
Tuesday, August 19th at 6pm
Loyalhannon Spinners will demonstrate the process of taking the
fleece from a sheep, carding, spinning, and weaving it into a finished
shawl in the Family Living Building.
Loyalhannon Spinners were Reserve Champion at the State Farm Show
this past January in Harrisburg. The sheep to shawl team usually
consists of a shearer who removes the fleece from the sheep, a carder
who cards the wool, thus opening up the locks for easier spinning, three
spinners who spin the carded fleece into yarn which the weaver uses on
the loom to create the shawl. Sometimes the spinners will also card the
wool.
Usually the team shears the sheep just before a sheep to shawl
contest but for our demonstration the team will use part of the fleece
used at Harrisburg. The fleece is from an oatmeal colored
Shetland Sheep wether (neutered male) named Gandolf. Shetland wool , the
softest British breed, makes a light weight shawl that is soft against
the skin.
